The Stoned-Ape Theory vs. The Endohuasca-Pole Shift Theory of Evolution

In the year 2022, human civilization generally considers itself to be quite advanced intellectually and technologically. Nevertheless, the process with which we as a species evolved from single-celled organisms to mammals, primates and eventually what we see in the mirror today is not entirely clear. While this piece is focused on evolutionary theory… it is predominantly focused on the perplexing evolutionary jump that’s been estimated to have occurred roughly 200,000 years ago. This “jump” pertains to the yet unexplained rapid increase in brain size purportedly leading us from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens.

One of the most well-known proponents of psychedelics and “out of the box thinking” was a philosopher named Terrence Mckenna (brother of Dr. Dennis Mckenna). While the physical body of Terrence died on April 3, 2000, his philosophical discussions live on infinitely on YouTube. While he would philosophize about a multitude of topics ranging from the “heroic dose” of psilocybin mushrooms to how to indulge in cannabis properly… in this piece we will touch upon one of his most famous theories regarding evolution which is known as “The Stoned-Ape Theory“. In this theory, Terence posits that our most recent ancestors experienced an evolutionary jump 200,000 years ago with a doubling of their brain size by ingesting the hallucinogenic psilocybin mushroom. Based on the latest research regarding the neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons in the brain) and neuroplastic properties (restructuring ability of the brain) of psilocybin, the theory does have a reasonable foundation based on scientifically generated data.

One of the recent figures who has continued to popularize his theory is mycologist Paul Stamets. In a conversation with Joe Rogan (podcast 1035), Stamets would provide his perspective on why the “Stoned Ape” theory makes sense from a scientific evolutionary perspective. Some of the key points are as follows (video below):

23 Different species of primates (including humans) consume mushrooms

Climate change induced our hunter/gatherer ancestors to leave the forest and begin foraging in the Savannah.

Hunting entails looking for footprints and scat (fecal matter). Hippopotamus, elephants, deer, antelope feces all contains the mushroom psilocybe cubensis (containing the psychedelic psilocybin).

Psilocybin substitutes as serotonin inducing neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

The human brain doubled in size 2 million to 200,000 years ago.

With the doubling in brain size came the ability to utilize language and plan for the future.

Psilocybin experiences increased empathy and reduced fear in our ancestors which eventually led to leadership skill sets.

Stamets emphasizes that this process did not take place solely over several generations but rather over millions of years leading to Epigenetic Neurogenesis.

While many of the points that Terrence and Stamets utilize to support the “Stoned Ape theory” seem rational enough, there are some loose ends that need to be considered as well. One of them has to be the distribution, consistency, and accessibility of psilocybin mushrooms as a food source for all human ancestors known (and undiscovered) across the globe. Another might be the dosage involved in which not enough mushrooms led to a lack of neurogenesis while too much consumption could hinder survivability (increased vulnerability) due to consistent incapacitation during psychedelic experiences. There might even be the possibility that too much consumption could dissuade our ancestors from consuming the fungus due to adverse effects (some people will never consume mushrooms again after experiencing a “heroic” dose). An interesting study in the future to explore the “Stoned Ape Theory” would be to feed psilocybin at varying dosages to rats throughout their lives and monitor for any significant changes in brain structure/size over the course of dozens of generations (rats reach sexual maturity at 4 weeks & have a 21 day gestation period). A 3 year study could theoretically produce a rat who has experienced 21 generations of epigenetic neurogenesis from psilocybin. While this would not simulate the “Stoned Ape Theory” based on timescale, it would to a lesser degree on biochemical catalyst and possible incremental changes.

The most recent human ancestor, Homo erectus was found to have lived in varying regions from China to Africa, Indonesia, and even Spain an estimated 2 million to 100,000 years ago. The general consensus narrative is that Homo erectus never set foot in the “New World” (Canada, North, Central, & South America). Instead, Homo erectus has been thought to have been extinct prior to Homo sapiens making the trek from Asia, across the Bering Land Bridge, and into Alaska an estimated 10,000 years ago. However, in 2017 Nature magazine published a study which claims to have found evidence that humans existed in California dating 100,000 years earlier than what has long been believed to be the first proof of humans in the New World (30,000 years ago). It seems evident that history, even more recent human evolutionary history is a difficult “story” to quantify being that over 95% of the land on earth has not been excavated to any significant depth and two-thirds of the planet is underwater. Being that I have no background in archaeology, geology, or anything remotely related to analyzing evolution, I ignorantly pronounce that not enough data exists to produce a comfortably accurate hypothesis of recent human evolution. From my naive vantage point, in a “perfect” scientific sense, we would need to excavate 1000 feet of the complete top layer of the entire earth in order to have a more thorough data set to reasonably postulate recent human evolution. As of this very moment, being married to a theory based on less than 5% of global excavation is like estimating the size of an iceberg by seeing just the tip. As the science popularizer and champion interrupter Neil Degrasse Tyson stated on his most recent Joe Rogan Podcast appearance, “Decisions made on partial information are bad decisions no matter what”. Apologies as I’m beginning to digress as this has little to do with the argument that Terrence McKenna and Dr. Stamets put forth.

A 2019 endogenous DMT study carried out by Dr. Jon Dean at the University of Michigan found extracellular levels of DMT in the basal area of the brain to be comparable to that of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. They also found that the same two enzymes (INMT/AADC) needed to synthesize DMT in the brain are identical in humans and rats. This is a significant finding being that it alludes to the notion that humans and potentially all mammals normally possess the endogenous psychedelic compounds to induce neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. This is not to say that there is not a catalyst to upregulate the synthesis and release of these compounds which we will touch upon later in this piece.

Ayahuasca is the shamanic brew with two plants (Psychotria viridis & B. caapi) containing DMT and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Both DMT and the alkaloids in the MAOI containing plant have been observed to induce neurogenesis and neuroplasticity much like psilocybin. While DMT is now known to occur in normal functioning mammalian brains, it is less well known that mammals also posses endogenous MAOI’s (tribulinneurocatintryptolinepinolineharman). There is also some data to suggest that the first discovered neurotransmitter acetylcholine (1, 2), has MAO inhibitory properties. This provides support to the term “Endohuasca” meaning the endogenous version of Ayahuasca.

A close cousin of DMT is a powerful hallucinogen known as 5-MeO-DMT aka “The God Molecule”. A 2018 study published in Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience found that a single dose of 5-MeO-DMT stimulated neurogenesis as well as morphological and functional changes in the brains of mice. Interestingly enough, 5-MeO-DMT is also an endogenous psychedelic compound found in the mammalian body.

It seems clear that mammalian physiology contains it’s own biochemical mix to potentially induce similar neurological evolutionary leaps as proposed by the “Stoned Ape Theory”. One of the more interesting studies of 2019 was published in the journal eNeuro which showed that much like many other animals, humans also possess the ability to autonomically perceive the earth’s magnetic field. The study would take place under the guise of biophysicist Joe Kirschvink at Caltech utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity. The research team would expose 34 volunteers to changes in a highly controlled magnetic field equal in strength to Earth’s magnetic field (25 to 65 microteslas).

Excerpts from a Science Magazine recap:

“In the experiment, each of the 34 participants sat quietly in a dark aluminum box that shielded them from electromagnetic noise such as radio waves. By changing the flow of electric current through coils lining the box, the researchers created a magnetic field that sloped steeply downward, like Earth’s own field at the midlatitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Then they rotated the field, as would happen if a person turned their head.”

“In an EEG study with a different design, published in 2002, other researchers failed to find any brain response to a changing field. Kirschvink says data analysis techniques used at the time were not powerful enough to detect an effect. The new study, published in eNeuro, found that the rotating field sometimes elicited a marked drop in waves of the α (alpha) frequency, which are typical of a brain that is awake but at rest.”

“The effect showed up in less than a third of participants, which could indicate that genetic factors or past experiences influence a person’s sensitivity to a magnetic field, says cognitive neuroscientist Shinsuke Shimojo, another member of the Caltech team. Mysteriously, the change registered only when the field was rotated counterclockwise.”

While animals of all types… birds, dolphins, reptiles, and amphibians have all been observed to exude magnetoreceptivity, the scientific community has largely shunned the notion that humans could possess this ability until recently. However being that this recent study showed a definitive effect of brain wave alteration from alterations in magnetic fields exposure in a percentage of humans, the implications are immense especially pertaining to evolution. A logical additional study would be to expose humans/rats to the same magnetic field strength/change as the eNeuro study and measure biochemical changes in the brain coinciding with the EEG oscillatory changes.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation in which a changing magnetic field is used to cause electric currents at a specific area of the brain through electromagnetic induction. The first TMS devices to be approved by the FDA took place in 2008. Since then, multiple studies have observed that TMS can induce neurogenesisalter brain glial cell secretionenhance theta-gamma wave coupling, and promote neuroplasticity. However, one thing to consider regarding TMS is the strength of the magnetic field utilized to induce these effects which ranges from 1.5 to 3 teslas (virtually identical to MRI strength). Being that 1 tesla is equal to 1 million microteslas and the fact that earth’s magnetic field generally fluctuates between 25 to 65 microteslas… TMS magnetic field strength is about 30,000 to 100,000 times stronger than earth’s magnetic field. This indicates that we cannot use TMS data as an apples to apples comparison of the potentiality of magnetic field influence on neural changes.

By comparison, in the 1990’s Dr. Michael Persinger and Stanley Koren developed a device called “The God Helmet“. This contraption utilizes magnetic field stimulation in the range of 1 to 5 microteslas. This helmet has been reported to induce mystical experiences including “Out of Body Experiences” as reported by skeptic Michael Shermer. A 2004 study in the International Journal of Neuroscience observed that exposure to “The God Helmet” induced increases in gamma wave strength in the frontal and occipital regions of the brain. Dr. Persinger would even postulate in a 2003 write-up in Perceptual and Motor Skills that endogenous DMT release coincided with “The God Helmet” experiences. As we’ve touched upon at DMT Quest for quite some time now, it appears as though increases in gamma waves correlate with changes in perception and likely Endohuasca upregulation. There is evidence to suggest that DMTAyahuasca5-MeO-DMTPsilocybin, and LSD induce their perceptual changes by enhancing gamma wave strength while decreasing power in the slower oscillatory bands.

Digging further into the literature of the effects of magnetic fields on brain activity, a 2020 study in the journal Maedica observed that stimulation at the 1 picotesla (0.000001 microtesla) range was able to significantly affect the 2-7 Hz range of epileptic patients. A 2008 study in the Journal of Integrative Neuroscience found that stimulation in the range of 1 to 7 picotesla decreased the beta waves and increased alpha oscillations in patients with central nervous system disorders. A 1994 study in the journal Panmiverna Medica found that stimulation at the 5 picotesla range (0.000005 microtesla) induced secretion of melatonin from the pineal gland. A 2015 rat study in The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology observed that exposure of a magnetic field 2 microtesla in strength for 2 or 5 days modulated the levels of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and other biogenic amine neurotransmitters. A 2009 study in the journal Brain Research Bulletin observed that exposure to magnetic fields in the 20 microtesla range induced an immediate and robust increase in beta frequency in rats lasting 30 minutes following exposure.

2000 study in the journal Pineal Research found that in vitro pineal glands exposed to magnetic fields 86 microtesla in strength suppressed melatonin secretion compared to baseline non-exposure. A 2004 study in the journal Clinical Neurophysiology observed that exposure to magnetic fields in the 100 microtesla range induced a 100 percent detection rate in humans when utilizing EEG measurement. A 2007 study in the journal Pain Research and Management found that patients suffering from fibromyalgia pain exposed to magnetic fields at 400 microtesla strength (twice a day for 40 minutes for 1 week) reported less pain compared to control stimulation. A 2000 study in the journal Bioelectromagnetics found that significant changes in brain wave patterns occurred in epileptic patients when exposed to magnetic fields ranging from 900 to 1,800 microtesla.

It seems clear that magnetic field exposure of widely varying levels (0.000005 microteslas to 3,000,000 microteslas) can induce significant alterations to brain activity. A 2010 study published in Geophysical Journal International cites that the earth’s magnetic field ranges from 25,000 to 65,000 nanoteslas. Being that multiple studies show altered brain activity induced by stimulation in the 1 to 7 picotesla range, it would seem highly likely that fluctuations in the nanotesla range (1 nanotesla = 1000 picotesla) of earth’s magnetic field can also change one’s brain waves. This would not be the case if earth’s magnetic field and it’s fluctuations fell in a weaker range than what is needed to stimulate a change in one’s neurology.

Since changes in brain oscillatory activity are directly correlated with neurotransmitter and hormonal secretion this brings us to the Endohuasca Pole Shift theory of evolution. Just to be clear… this theory has nothing to do with the “Cataclysmic Pole Shift” hypothesis which claims that rapid changes in geology occurred from magnetic pole shifts creating floods, earthquakes and general environmental discord. I’m not stating that there is no validity to that hypothesis but am simply stating that the Endohuasca Pole Shift theory is primarily focused on evolutionary biological influences based on electromagnetic properties. While there is much discourse regarding exactly when the most recent pole shift occurred, whether it was full or partial, and the length of time a pole shift takes to complete, all researchers concede that significant changes to the earth’s magnetic field occur during the process. Based on the data presented above in regards to magnetic field influence on brain activity and biochemical secretion, I believe that it is a rational hypothesis to presume that DNA mutations, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity occurred due to a sustained change in biochemical synthesis/secretion (DMT(s) & MAOI’s) from the magnetic field changes leading to the doubling of brain size in humans. I’m not claiming that all human ancestors at the time experienced the equivalent of a full dose of Ayahuasca all the time. This would obviously lead to extreme vulnerability and incapacitation. What I am saying is that there is the potential that a constant increase of endogenous DMT/5-MeO-DMT just below (and possibly slightly above) the psychedelic threshold offered the biochemical soup to induce significant changes to brain size and connectivity. It would be akin to a micro to mid-dosing schedule of 24/7 for decades at a time over multiple generations. Recent research in 2021 by Algernon Pharmaceuticals observed a 40% increase in neuronal growth from administering sub-psychedelic doses of DMT in vitro. The researchers administered DMT in the range of 100 picomolar to 30 nanomolar and claimed that significant growth occurred even at the lowest range. This is significant being that this falls well within the range of endogenous DMT levels from the 2019 study. Alongside the anatomical neurological changes also lie the potential increases in perceptual prowess from the upregulation of Endohuasca similarly to the Matsigenka tribe in Peru that utilizes mid-level Ayahuasca doses to improve their aim in hunting.

2018 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that for the first time ever, a pole shift (partial) occurred about 98,360 years ago that only took an estimated 144 years to complete. This is a significantly faster time of completion than what had been previously assumed as necessary (7,000 to 20,000 years). I presume that this occurrence isn’t the only time that this has transpired on this planet and there lies the potentiality that drastic magnetic field alterations at this rate of pole shift speed can induce the necessary multi-layered changes cited above leading to accelerated growth in brain size. Whether this occurrence took place 100,000, 200,000 or 1,000,000 years ago is not our focus of concern. I am mainly focused on the mechanics of occurrence rather than the specific time period. According to Stamets, evolutionary scientists speculate that this doubling of brain size occurred between 200,000 and 2 million years ago. This could have afforded multiple pole shifts to have occurred during this time inducing the subsequent effects. While geologists claim that pole shifts take place every 200,000 years, this estimate could change drastically as more data is generated in the future. According to an article by Smithsonian Magazine, the earth’s magnetic pole has flipped completely 10 times and nearly flipped 20 times during events called excursions (which we’ll touch upon later). Nevertheless the increase in brain size could have resulted from one transformative pole shift event or multiple ones as far back as 2 million years ago. I’m not claiming that this process did not occur without loss or that it was an entirely comfortable transpiration. There lies the possibility that many specimens did not survive this evolutionary period and only the epigenetically developed were capable of weathering the neurological storm taking place within their bodies.

(An image from Nature showing the movement of the north magnetic pole)

As I’ve touched upon many times here, based on Dr. Robert O. Becker’s research published in various scientific journals as well as his book “The Body Electric“, the brain and body also have their own poles with positive and negative terminals. As documented in the book, changes in the direction of the direct current (DC) measurement in the brain coincided with changes in consciousness (image below). A strongly positive frontal potential coincided with the sleep state and anesthesia (delta EEG equivalent). A strongly negative frontal potential coincided with being awake and alert (beta-gamma EEG equivalent). When Becker tested the effects of hypnosis on the subjects, the results fell somewhere in between alertness and being asleep.

Excerpt from The Body Electric:
“One of the most exciting results of my collaboration with Dr. Friedman was proof that one’s state of waking consciousness could change the perception of pain. Friedman, who already used hypnosis to control chronic pain in his patients, gave several of his best subjects hypnotic suggestions of arm numbness deep enough that they couldn’t feel the prick of a needle. In each case, I found that the frontal negative potential of the head became less negative, often reaching zero, as the client attained deep trance. The reading changed in the same direction as in anesthesia, only not as far.”

My perspective of hypnosis is quantitative in a sense that it’s obvious that cascade effects are taking place during the process of relaxation, induction, and deepening including but not limited to changes in cerebral blood flowEEG alterations, and neurotransmitter/hormonal secretion. A 2015 write-up in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis titled, “Hypnosis, Neuroplasticity, and the Plastic Paradox”, outlines some of the literature indicating that hypnosis can induce greater neuroplastic potential compared to normal, awake states of consciousness. The author cites that slower oscillatory bands such as theta waves (4 to 8 Hz) increase as people become more responsive to hypnotic inductions and suggestions. I postulate that changes in the earth’s magnetic field during pole shifts induces changes in the direction and strength of the current flow in the brain which is equivalent to increases in theta waves (and possibly gamma) allowing for a greater neurogenesis/neuroplastic potential during this time. There is periphery data indicating that melatonin secretion coincides with slow wave (theta) hypnotic like states (meditationbreathing exercises) and several studies allude to the neurogenesis properties of melatonin itself (12345). It is never simply just a gene mutation, an alteration in the matrix of biochemical balance, a change in brain wave patterns, or a change in the DC direction in the brain… it is everything taking place all at once. Sometimes the chemical (ex: Psilocybin) acts as the catalyst to induce the changes in electrical oscillations and subsequent perceptual changes while sometimes an external magnetic field can act as the catalyst that induces enhanced secretion of a specific balance of neurotransmitters (ex: Endohuasca). This perspective of systemic layers acting in synchrony coincides with this evolutionary theory as well as during altered states of consciousness occurring throughout the world today.

The reason why I believe that the Endohausca-Pole Shift theory has greater plausibility compared to the “Stoned Ape” theory is due to the fact that the magnetic field alterations would effect all human ancestors on the planet in a rather uniform manner. While there are differences in the magnetic field strength based on location on earth (north-south pole vs. equator), generally speaking these aren’t as pronounced as dietary discrepancies as could be seen with psilocybin ingestion. To be truthful, the Endohuasca-Pole Shift theory is somewhat inspired by the “Stoned-Ape Theory” as it provides a biochemical perspective of biological evolution. There also lies the possibility that a global evolutionary leap took place based on magnetic stimulation while some of the more “stoned-apes” who did consume psilocybin could have been the more “enlightened” specimens of the time.

Just to recap the data supporting the Endohuasca-Pole Shift Evolution Theory:

  • Psychedelics such as DMT, 5-MEO-DMT, Bufotenine, and MAOI’s (B.Caapi) have the ability to stimulate neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

  • Very low, sub-psychedelic levels of DMT have been observed to induce significant neuronal growth in-vitro

  • Magnetic fields of vastly differing strengths have the ability to alter brain oscillatory activity in addition to inducing altered biochemical secretion.

  • Pole shifts induce measurable changes in the strength of Earth’s magnetic field.

  • Earth’s magnetic field ranges from 25,000 to 65,000 nanoteslas. Much greater strength than the 1 picotesla range that has been observed to alter brain activity.

  • I hypothesize that a significant alteration in earth’s magnetic field based on pole shifts took place during the time frame of roughly 50,000 to 1,000,000 years ago inducing accelerated brain growth in human ancestors.

A few random notes:

One of the consistent findings in all of the serotonergic psychedelic EEG studies (DMTAyahuasca (12345), 5-MeO-DMTPsilocybin (123), LSD (1)) is that nearly 100% of them have measured a significant drop in Alpha waves following ingestion. I find this interesting in light of the drop in Alpha waves from magnetic field exposure in the 2019 eNeuro study. This isn’t to say that the volunteers in the eNeuro study experienced psychedelic experiences during the process of magnetic field exposure but rather that there is overlap in terms of brain oscillatory activity. Another thing we found interesting is that this alteration in Alpha waves only took place when the magnetic field was rotated counterclockwise. Perhaps coincidentally, Dr. Persinger’s “God Helmet” utilizes counterclockwise rotating magnetic fields to induce it’s effects.

When I refer to the direct current (DC) direction in the brain coinciding with changes in consciousness, I must reiterate that it doesn’t mean that the current is only flowing in one direction as observed in artificial wiring. I’m referring to the general direction of the electron flow in the brain while also producing weak alternating oscillations at the same time. In regards to the effects of pole shifts on the brain’s DC, even gradual changes in the magnetic field can alter the strength of the DC leading to subtle alterations in consciousness. A complete 180 degree flip doesn’t need to take place in order to change the brain’s state of consciousness and enhanced neuroplastic properties. However, theoretically speaking… (and I could be wrong) a dramatic 180 degree magnetic pole shift on the earth could cause a very pronounced shift in the DC direction in the brain. This could lead to something akin to being in a walking trance-like hypnotic state all the time which allows for significant neurological and perceptual changes.

As I’ve mentioned above, pole flips can experience occurrences called excursions in which the pole’s try to reverse position but instead snap back into place rapidly. This would induce an extreme acceleration in terms of the speed of magnetic field changes. This could be key in terms of accelerated brain development similarly to the reaction of muscle growth to steadily increasing weight lifting stress. Too little stress fails to induce muscle growth while too much stress can lead to muscle tears. One of the most well known excursions is the Laschamp Event. It occurred an estimated 41,400 years ago during the last ice age. The period of reversed magnetic field lasted about 440 years, with the transition from the normal field lasting approximately 250 years. The reversed magnetic field was 75% weaker, whereas the strength dropped to only 5% of the current strength during the transition resulting in a greater level of radiation reaching the earth. 2010 write-up in Quarternary Science Reviews presents the hypothesis that the increase in UV-B rays from the weakened magnetic field during the Laschamp Event, played a role in the demise of the Neanderthals about 41,000 years ago. A 2019 write-up in the journal Review of Geophysics elaborates on this Laschamp-Neanderthal extinction hypothesis citing specific DNA mutations (aryl hydrocarbon receptor) allowing humans to better cope with the increased UV-B radiation which led to the demise of not only neanderthals but numerous mammalian extinctions during this time. A 2018 write-up in the journal Endocrinology discusses the effects of UV light on chemical, hormonal, and neural signaling with supportive evidence indicating that UV-B radiation acts in a much more effective and efficient manner than UV-A radiation.  The researchers unequivocally cite that UV rays have been a key factor in shaping both biological evolution and homeostatic responses. An unrelated 2005 study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs observed that DMT levels exuded a circadian rhythm in the plant Psychotria Viridis. The researchers hypothesize that the plant produces DMT either to protect itself from solar radiation or that DMT is produced to absorb solar radiation for other purposes. They also state that the rhythm is not likely to be coincidental as DMT specifically has the greatest UV absorbance in the ultraviolet spectrum from 280 to 315 nm which happens to be the exact range of the UV-B radiation spectrum.

Endogenous DMT acting not only as a neuroplastic/neurogenesis compound but also providing protection against increased UV-B radiation from weakened magnetic fields during pole shifts? Era’s of enlightened consciousness and enhanced perception coinciding with pole flips due to a significant uptick of the Endohuasca system? If era’s of enlightenment can take place from pole shifts… era’s of dark ages (the 1980’s anyone?) can surely take place from the opposite.

Unprovable speculations are wonderful!

2014 review in Frontiers in Plant Science titled “Magnetic Field Effects on Plant Growth, Development, and Evolution” outlines some interesting points regarding the potential effects of geomagnetic field changes on plant evolution. The author cites the importance of cyptochrome-dependent signaling pathways in terms of plant growth, development, and magnetoreceptivity. The author also cites several studies alluding to genetic changes in plants induced by magnetic field reversals. The researcher hypothesizes the following: “The recent implications of magnetic field reversal with plant evolution opens new horizons not only in plant science but also to the whole biosphere, from the simplest organisms to human beings.” A 2015 study in the Journal of Visualized Experiments conducted an experiment on the plant Arabidopsis thaliana and found that “reversing the GMF (geomagnetic field) polarity using triaxial coils has significant effects on plant growth and gene expression. This supports the hypothesis that GMF reversal contributes to inducing changes in plant development that might justify a higher selective pressure, eventually leading to plant evolution.”

Schumann resonances are spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency portion of the Earth’s electromagnetic field spectrum between the surface and the densest part of the ionosphere. These global electromagnetic resonances are generated and excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere. A 2016 study published in the Public Library of Science One utilized quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) measurements of 184 individuals over 3.5 years to verify whether there is any correlatory activity between brain and Schumann resonance power densities. The researchers found that multiple harmonics within the Schumann resonance were discernible in the averaged QEEG profile of some but not all subjects. This is interesting in light of the recent study indicating that some but not all human subjects autonomically detected changes in earth’s magnetic field.

While many researchers will claim that evolution is somewhat linear coinciding with climate changes and environmental flux, I believe that there are leaps and lulls in evolution based on the magnetic field influence on general physiology. I speculate that certain periods of history provided stability, general halts, and possibly even regressions in evolution (1980’s?) while other periods involved significant gyrations in pole movement and earth’s magnetic field inducing currently unexplained leaps in biological development. While some scientists will claim that based on archaeological digs that magnetic field fluctuation and pole shifts had little to no effect on the earth’s inhabitants in the past, based on what is known today about effects of very subtle magnetic stimulation on the nervous system I think it’s an assumption that doesn’t entirely hold up. In case some of you haven’t noticed… the world seems to be in quite a state of societal and emotional flux. While many will point to the flow of information online, electronic device usage, social class divide, and political discourse as the culprits… perhaps it’s the ongoing pole shift that is the subtle underlying catalyst behind it all. It could simply be a coincidence that all of this is taking place simultaneously at this very moment or it could be history repeating itself from an evolutionary perspective as we humans experience the next leap in our evolution… in real-time.

P.S. And who knows how the sun effects the cycles of earth’s pole shifts if at all. The sun itself regularly experiences magnetic field flips every 11 years. An author that seems to have an interesting, original take in terms of the effects of pole shifts and evolutionary history is Robert W. Felix who has written the books, “Not by Fire, But by Ice“, and “Magnetic Reversals and Evolutionary Leaps.”
